For what you want to do, gMax is an excellent tool. From the lo-poly modeler's point of view, gMax is just as good as Max. It is the same interface as Max r4 ... which fits perfectly in with Steed's book.

Does anyone know where I could get something to make my 3ds max 4 to be able to import/export .mdl files? For such games as half-life?

Try asking your question on the polycount message boards, or search their resource files.

Any desire / interest, that I take a closer look at all the links and merge / update / check them all for a more up to date list?I'd also considder merge / deleting most of the one-liner posts to make this thread lean and mean Paul has already made a quite outstanding job obviously. Lenard, you might want to re-post your question in your own seperate thread... I have the feeling the sticky threads are more reference, that 'real time' feedback threads.

Hey AEon,It's a good idea to prune all one liner posts... Including this one when you've finished reading it. (Reminds me of the Inspector Gadget cartoons 'This message will self destruct...') It'll take quite a bit of sorting to get things organized. A lot of those pages still exist, they've just been moved and shuffled around. You may have to try and find the location for each broken link. It's a lot of trouble, but I'm sure many would appreciate the effort. Paul Jaquays still maintains his list at MapCenter. I think there's another list somewhere at http://paul.jaquays.com that'll save you some trouble at least. Obsidian, not sure when I will get around to checking all the above... main trouble is that I am not in any way an expert on modelling... but will see what I can do...Maybe a better job for the other mods at LEM? Hint hint

Would have been glad to do it if I were a mod... oh well, I guess I can just sit back, relax and watch you do it instead. Map-Center link is dead but I found the updated list on Paul Jaquays' website: http://gameart.jaquays.com/model_resources.html Please add this link to the top of this thread, replacing the Map-Center link. Some of the above discussions are still useful, so don't kill this thread... not yet anyway. I'm going to try to sort through this stuff and see what's useful and what's not - then I'll give you a list of things to update.

obsidian, you don't really need to be a mod to help... I always copy and past the links/posts into a text anyway and edit them there. If you then email me the changes, I will update the thread here. Pitty that normal local web pages will not understand the ubb code... [This message has been edited by AEon : 08-29-2003.]

Will do, but I'm leaving for California on Sunday morning. I'll have to take a look when I get back (unless I can find a computer to hijack down there).Erm, E-mail? You don't have an E-mail address in your profile there. If you don't want it to be posted publicly, send me an E-mail with your E-mail address and I'll get back to you (hope that made sense).

Skinning Tutorial: http://planetquake.com/professorq/wwwc/3DVG/q3tutorials/maxmodels.htmUpdated and Enhanced MD3 Exporter based on PnF: http://mojo.gmaxsupport.com/index.html This sticky will need to be cleaned and streamlined. I'll look into creating a table of contents like in the LE resources sticky. [This message has been edited by obsidian : 03-25-2004.]
